Faith of Our Founding Fathers
An opening collection exploring faith, public leadership, and the way later artists remembered America’s founding generation. A painting expresses an interpretation; it does not by itself establish a historical event or a person’s religious beliefs.

The Prayer at Valley Forge
Arnold Friberg
The Story in the Art
The solitary figure of Washington at prayer gives this later devotional interpretation its emotional center. The horse, snow, and bowed head suggest hardship and dependence. Read it as an artist’s reflection on leadership and faith, rather than an eyewitness record.
The formal portrait invites reflection on public duty and personal character. Compare its reserved presentation of leadership with Friberg’s devotional scene; a portrait alone cannot tell us the full story of its sitter’s faith.
The presentation of a document becomes a collective image of political responsibility. Consider the relationship between conscience, liberty, and civic life without assuming that every founder held identical religious convictions.
